In Anambra state’s Nnewi South Local Government Area (LGA), the Kingsley Obiukwu Foundation Unity Cup 2024 has generated a lot of excitement and anticipation among the locals.
The event, which is currently in its semi-final, has brought people together to celebrate and display their athletic talent and prowess, fostering a spirit of brotherhood, unity, and sportsmanship within the community.
The tourney which involves the 10 communities of Nnewi South and runs from August to September, is an important instrument for social development, especially in an area where peace and security can be brittle, according to the convener, Kingsley Obiukwu.
The final cash rewards of N700,000, N500,000, and N300,000 for the top 3 teams offer more than simply money incentives; they aim to promote a sense of communal spirit and stimulate ongoing community development. He also remarked that the inflow of spectators had benefitted local businesses.
Obiukwu claims, “The Kingsley Obiukwu Foundation Unity Cup 2024 is a symbol of peace, not just a football competition. Our objective is to include young people in constructive, organised activities. By guiding them away from crime and towards a culture of peace, the tournament helps to reduce tensions.
“This year’s tournament brings together the towns of Amichi, Azigbo, Ekwulumili, Osumenyi, Ukpor, Akwaihedi, Ebenator, Ezinifite, Unubi, and Utuh. Each match goes beyond sport, they are a celebration of community spirit and a testament to the collective strength of these communities.
“The steady influx of spectators into each town for the football matches is also helping local businesses and vendors thrive, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.”
Umezinwa Obiora, a spectator from Ukpor, commended the competition’s organisers and characterised the event as a much-needed stress reliever, saying: “This tournament has doused tensions in the community and united us.” We appreciate the Kingsley Obiukwu Foundation for this wonderful project.”
